Coney Island: Side Show
A companion show to the Wadsworth Atheneum’s, Coney Island: Visions of an American Dreamland, 1861 - 2008, curated by Robin Jaffee Frank, this exhibition focuses on photographs that depict Coney Island’s attraction and transformation of people and place over the last 80 years. Coney Island: Side Show features work by 15 photographers including Bruce Davidson, Morris Engel, and Arthur Leipzig alongside Westport photographers Nathaniel Gibbons, Douglas Healey, David Kalman, and Stephen Wilkes.
Coney Island: Side Show will explore the allure of a century old American seaside amusement park,by some of the most influential photographers of the 20th century. The metaphor of ‘side show’ hopefully will provide a glimpse of one of the world’s great destinations-- a roller coaster ride that will take the audience to the peaks and troughs of an American dream. Together through our collective memory we can share experiences- ours, our parents, our grandparents, or strangers. We can simply look at these powerful portraits and images, connect and ‘get it.’ - Helen Klisser During, Curator, Westport Arts Center Artistic Director
